About 15 minutes up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Circle-All Peak is a moderate hike that offers great views of surrounding big peaks — most noticeably Kessler Peak directly ahead.
Trail Type: Hiking
Length: 3.1 miles roundtrip
Elevation gain: about 1,500 ft
Approximate hiking time: 2.5-3 hours
Circle-All Peak trail, which shares the same trail as Butler Fork, is located about 9 miles into Big Cottonwood Canyon. Easy parking can be found at the trailhead. There’s also parking across the street if the trailhead pull-out is full.
Follow the steep Butler Fork trail. About half a mile into the hike, you’ll encounter a fork which leads to either Dog Lake (to the right) or Mill A Basin (straight ahead). Choose the Mill A Basin route. The slope climbs above the stream and into a forest of aspens. You’ll switchback up until you hit the ridge line. Once past it, you’ll notice a log on your left-hand side. You’re only 300 feet away from the viewpoint at this point! Step over it and follow the skinnier, less-traveled foot path to the Circle-All lookout.
Once at the Circle-All lookout or “peak” you get a great view of big peaks surrounding Big Cottonwood. Most noticeable, is the great view of Kessler Peak directly ahead. It’s easy to miss the turn off to the Circle-All footpath from the Butler Fork trail so pay close attention and look out for the log we mentioned above!
