Salt Lake City gained a second major league sports franchise when Real Salt Lake began Major League Soccer competition in 2005.
Real Salt Lake is the 10-year-old league's 12th team. The league intends to continue expanding, bringing on 2 more teams for the 2006 season.
Real Salt Lake is owned by Sports Capital Partners; Dave Checketts is the principal owner. Checketts has a long history in major league sports management.
Competition for the team was keen. The league selected Salt Lake City for several reasons, including Checketts experience and Utah's unique demographics. The league found that Utah has a significant soccer fan base already in place and has the nation's highest per-capita participation in organized soccer (estimated at more than 200,000 players).
Key Real Salt Lake players include Jason Kreis, the all-time leading scorer in league history.
