Sundance Film Festival and Beyond
The annual Sundance Film Festival runs Jan 18-28. Most events are held in Park City, with some in Salt Lake City and at other spots along Utah's Wasatch Front.
The event is very popular. It dominates the Park City scene, bringing crowds, traffic, celebrities and parties galore. Major events book up fast but there are always opportunities to get into the glitz, even if you spontaneously drop in for just one evening.
See the festival website and Daily Insider publication for current info on what to see and where to see it.
Park City is all about skiing. Area resorts will be crowded during Sundance, but when the festivities end, when Hollywood goes home, the town's atmosphere becomes more laid back and hospitable.
January and February usually bring the best skiing of the year at Utah resorts. The snow is already deep and new storms bring fresh powder every few days. Conditions were excellent for the Christmas holiday and this season is already being described as one of the best ever for ski enthusiasts.
But skiing isn't the only game in town. Park City and Salt Lake City have matured during the past few years. They have become more diverse, more cosmopolitan, and they offer excellent restaurants, clubs, pubs, musical events and other kinds of nightlife. These communities offer a wide range of opportunities, from family-friendly theatre to dance clubs to fine wine.
Bryce Canyon Winter Festival
Bryce Canyon is a winter wonderland where snow piles deep. Bryce Canyon Winter Festival, held every year over Presidents Day weekend (Feb 17-19, 2007), offers the chance to learn about and participate in a wide variety of winter recreational activities including:
Cross country ski tours
Snowshoe tours and races
Archery clinic
Ski archery competition
Kayaking demos
Waxing clinics
Photography clinics
Photo contest
Snow sculpture contest
People-powered sled race
Kids snowboot races
The festival is held at Ruby's Inn, located just outside the national park boundaries.
There is great downhill skiing nearby at Brian Head Resort, and excellent snowmobiling on groomed trails in the East Fork complex (located on the plateau above Bryce Canyon), and on Cedar Mountain (near Brian Head).
