Westminster Presents Viewing of Frederica von Stade Master Class
Salt Lake City
Nov 14 - Nov 14
Westminster College is proud to present a master class by the internationally renowned operatic mezzo-soprano, Frederica von Stade on Nov. 14, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory. The public is invited to view and listen as von Stade coaches the college’s aspiring singers.

The audience will hear some of Westminster's best singers perform well-known songs and arias as Von Stade helps them hone their musicianship, technique and artistry. The class will be followed by a brief question and answer period for the audience.

"We are beyond thrilled to have an artist of Ms. von Stade's caliber come work with our young singers at Westminster," said Michael Chipman, assistant professor of music and head of Westminster's voice program. “On and off stage she exudes consummate artistry, warm humanity and an indescribable spark of personality that makes her a star. Our students and campus community will be better and brighter because of her visit."

Von Stade, known to her fans as “Flicka,” has been a prominent part of classical music for three decades. During her stellar career she has performed in the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden and the Vienna state opera. She appears regularly on television, in numerous PBS and other broadcasts. In 2002, she performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as part of the opening ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games.

Von Stade is the holder of honorary doctorates from Yale University, Boston University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (which holds a Frederica von Stade Distinguished Chair in Voice), the Georgetown University School of Medicine and her alma mater, the Mannes School of Music. In 1998, von Stade was awarded France’s highest honor in the Arts when she was appointed as officer of L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 1983, President Reagan recognized her significant contribution to the arts during an award ceremony at the White House.
